Surface grinding

Capacity of 16" x 32"

What is surface grinding?

Surface grinding is a precise machining process used to obtain a flat and smooth surface on a workpiece. It is an abrasive machining operation in which a grinding wheel, consisting of abrasive particles, is used to gradually remove thin layers of material from the workpiece being ground. As the grinding wheel rotates at high speed, the abrasive particles remove the roughness and imperfections from the surface of the workpiece, creating a flat surface parallel to the machine table.

Finition

Advantages of surface grinding

  • High dimensional precision: Surface grinding allows for achieving flat surfaces with extremely high dimensional precision. Tight dimensional tolerances can be achieved, which is essential in many industries such as aerospace, automotive, and electronics.
  • Capability to work with hard materials: Surface grinding is effective in machining hard materials such as hardened steel, titanium alloys, ceramics, and composite materials. This allows for obtaining finished parts with high strength, durability, and improved mechanical properties.
  • Correction of surface defects: It can be used to eliminate surface defects, distortions, or irregularities caused by other manufacturing processes. It restores the flatness and straightness of surfaces, ensuring the conformity of parts to the required specifications.
  • Adaptability to different shapes and sizes: Surface grinding can be used to machine flat surfaces of various shapes and sizes, whether they are large plates or small parts. It is versatile and can be applied to a variety of geometries, making it a flexible machining method.

Uses in different industries

Surface grinding is a process used in various different industries. Here are a few examples:

  • Aerospace (seal joint surfaces, rotor blades, wing profiles, turbine rings)
  • Automotive (bearing seating surfaces, braking surfaces, camshafts grinding)
  • Tool and cutting industry (saw blades, drill bits, milling cutters)
  • Molds and dies
